Plan A

Doyle paused at the door to the squad room and wondered if he’d missed his partner. They hadn’t said anything about meeting up before Bodie left, but Doyle still had Plan A to execute properly.

“Bodie?” He asked.

Neither Jax nor Murphy looked up.

“Locker room,” said Murphy, immersed in a dog-eared Playboy. “Maybe.”

“Yeah. Getting into his... y’know... stuff,” echoed an equally distracted Jax.

Doyle waited a moment or two, looking from one to the other. He shook his head and eased off the doorjamb. “Well, cheers for that. Good to know the nation’s got you two bloodhounds on the alert and keeping it safe tonight.”

He was four steps down the corridor when Murphy’s lazy drawl sounded out.

“Fuck off will you, Doyle? There’s a good lad.”

Doyle smiled and quickened his step.

“’Ello, ’ello , ’ello, what’s all this, then?”

Bodie looked up from where he seemed to be struggling with a cufflink. “Oh, it’s you.” He stretched his sleeve out. “Be useful and give us a hand with this, sunshine.”

“Certainly, sir.” Doyle stepped forward and got the silver clasp through and fixed. “There.” He moved back and eyed the black suit and the tailored grey shirt. “And you are..?”

“And I am what?”

“Well, what are you? A male tart with a heart? Someone’s chauffeur?”

Doyle ducked the expected cuff and grinned.

“Cheeky sod. I’m a down-on-his-luck dealer with an itch to get back into the game. As well you know.”

“Not much of a stretch then, mate. Well, apart from the dealer with an itch bit.”

“I’ll itch you in a minute, sunshine.” Tying a lace on an immaculate shoe, Bodie straightened and spread his arms wide. “How do I look, then?”

A bestubbled vision in black, thought Doyle. Nervous though, if you knew how to look for it. Bodie always did go undercover with an air of pained resignation, the constant role-playing not something he did with relish. Unless, of course, something blonde and distressed was involved.

Doyle sniffed speculatively and circled him slowly, taking him in from head to foot. “Well, I’d buy an armalite off you.”

“You would, eh? Means the world to me that does, mate.”

Openly grinning, one at the other, it suddenly hit Doyle that he wasn’t going to see his partner for a while. True to his recently formed plan, he’d been trying to scowl at the world a little less and get Bodie to laugh at it a little more.

Finally aware of the damage his temper and frustrations had done after Mayli, he had spent the last week or so trying to put some things right. Not least with Bodie, the man he’d mercilessly left on the front line of all that rage and slow healing. Just on the way over to HQ in the car this morning he’d dredged up a filthy joke, and Bodie’d been in stitches as he’d dragged it out, affecting voices and mannerisms galore. When Bodie’d finished wiping his eyes, he’d looked at him then much as he was looking at him now. And for once Doyle hadn’t minded, hadn’t snapped anything sarcastic to puncture it all.

Bodie cleared his throat. “Well, best get moving. Can’t hang around all day with the likes of you. Places to go, terrorists to woo.”

“Here.” Doyle stepped forward before Bodie could turn away, and tucked a packet of Benson and Hedges into his top pocket. Bodie liked to smoke undercover; he said it made him feel like someone else, and as he’d pointed out to Doyle, nothing bonded you to young infidels like a shared nicotine habit.

Doyle resisted the urge to lay his hand flat on his partner’s chest and instead turned it into the much more acceptable finger jab. “No more than ten a day, all right? Or I’ll skin you.”

“Promises, promises, Ray.” Bodie held his eyes for a long moment, and Doyle’s retort died on his lips. Then with a wink, Bodie cuffed him and was out the door and gone.

Doyle could only sit down rather heavily on the locker room bench and contemplate a sudden stillness he didn’t much care for.

Time for Plan B then.

Hold on a mo, I think this little fic might just have everything in it I hold dear ... a little squad room banter - check; a Lad getting either in or out of clothes - check; Bodie in black - check; fabulous Ladspeak - places to go, terrorists to woo hee! - check; Lads uneasy with each other but obviously oh so in love - check; cigarettes! - check; partner concern! - check; oh man, and that final two lines ... the realisation that the pre-slash must henceforth become slash *g* - CHECK!

Loved it, mate!

Well, yes, I'd say this is pretty much the start of a story... *g* (I mean, you can't leave us there!) It's a nice scene--I like the affection between them, and that they don't seem to quite know what to do with it--except admit that they enjoy it.

So, go on, what's plan B...? *g*

Thank you!
Aug. 15th, 2009 04:05 pm (UTC)
There is definitely a Plan B, have no fear. Thought I might tackle that with a later challenge! Thank you, I'm delighted the affection and hesitancy came through in Plan A.

This was darling! Jojo's list *points up* goes double for me.

But Callisto, you know how this crowd gets when they smell blood in the water a "to be continued..." I hope you have the rest of the story in mind, or a very thick skin.
Aug. 15th, 2009 04:07 pm (UTC)
I hope you have the rest of the story in mind, or a very thick skin. Hee! Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed it, and I shall get our Doyle to divulge Plan B as soon as possible..
Aug. 15th, 2009 04:04 pm (UTC)

Oh yeah... come on, give it up woman. Where's Plan B? ::waggles eyebrows::

You've packed so many nice things into such a small space, I'll just add to Jojo's list: lads helping one another dress. ::happy sigh::

Thank you!

Aug. 15th, 2009 04:10 pm (UTC)
Aw, thank you. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. And I just liked the idea of Doyle helping Bodie with cufflinks.*g*

.. and Plan B is brewing.

Ohhh, nice. I like how Doyle's determined to be nicer to Bodie and how much Bodie responds to Doyle. Plan A didn't work... yet. But Doyle's a smart cookie. He'll figure this out.

Thanks, C. I like it very much.
Aug. 16th, 2009 07:37 am (UTC)
Thank you, Kat. I wanted a Doyle actually making a conscious effort to be nice here, and Mayli is a good motivating reason for that.
Aug. 15th, 2009 08:45 pm (UTC)
Oh this is marvellous! Snarky, bantery in-love-but-yet-to-acknowledge-it Lads - brilliant. *g*

Bodie cleared his throat. “Well, best get moving. Can’t hang around all day with the likes of you. Places to go, terrorists to woo.”

*unobtrusively nudges them towards each other* *just a bit*

Loved it Petal - thanks so much for the warm fuzzy feeling in my tummy now. ♥

Thank you - I'm always delighted to give folk fuzzy stomachs..*g*
bantery in-love-but-yet-to-acknowledge-it Lads What a lovely way to put it!

Have to agree with all the other comments here, a delightful story with the best of what we love about the boys. Looking forward to Plan B though!
Aug. 16th, 2009 07:40 am (UTC)
Cheers, I appreciate the comment. And I'm pleased a Plan B appeals to you!

I'm only as far as Chicago, having driven in with my bro and his girl a couple of hours ago. B-more is tomorrow. Am heading out for dinner with a pal in a bit, but first...

...I'm in a Pros mood, having finished NFA2 at the lake (and utterly distroying the zine at the beach--but that's for another day). Thanks for scratching my itch! I loved this. Your dialogue shines as always. The lads are lovely together. It makes me ever so happy.

Will write more later (with pics!). Sorry to hear of your keyboard woes.
Aug. 16th, 2009 07:43 am (UTC)
Hey!! ::waves to An:: Welcome home, hon.. almost! So NFA2 was good holiday reading, eh? I haven't started mine yet, just waiting for all my guests to leave.

Thank you, I'm so glad this could scratch that Pros itch for ya..

And yes, want more and want more with pics xxx

*sits with silly grin on face* Erm... but you didn't ask what my Native American name is so... *g*

I really love the... "softness" of this, Doyle trying to be a kinder gentler version. It really plays off nicely against Doyle's observations of how uncomfortable Bodie is working undercover.

I also really like your economy in revealing what's at stake here: When Bodie’d finished wiping his eyes, he’d looked at him then much as he was looking at him now. And for once Doyle hadn’t minded, hadn’t snapped anything sarcastic to puncture it all..

Thanks Petal and I look forward to Plan B. ♥

I really love the... "softness" of this, Doyle trying to be a kinder gentler version. Thank you for catching that! It doesn't necesarily come naturally to him, so I wanted to make it a conscious effort on his part; I thought it might be rather endearing..

And Plan B is going to disarm poor Bodie completely.*g*
Aug. 16th, 2009 12:39 am (UTC)
Yep I smell a "to be continued" here as well.
I like the intense scene, well into pre-slash - with the tension not quite to be slash with all the well working ingredients already stated by Jojo. Thank you!
Aug. 16th, 2009 07:47 am (UTC)
Thank you. I do love the tension you can play with in pre-slash scenes, so I'm delighted that worked for you here.
Aug. 16th, 2009 01:40 am (UTC)
This was lovely. A bit of humor; the old double act; Ray with a conscience is a bit new but I liked where it took him. And what a great line "contemplate a sudden stillness he didn't much care for."
Aug. 16th, 2009 07:49 am (UTC)
Ray with a conscience is a bit new but I liked where it took him. Thank you, it was fun to make him have to concentrate to be nice..*g*
Aug. 16th, 2009 06:05 am (UTC)
I'm so happy to see a Pros fic by you, miss! Despite the fact that I don't wanna see Bodie smoking, I understand his need to be someone else undercover--love this:nothing bonded you to young infidels like a shared nicotine habit.

Waiting for Plan B.

Aug. 16th, 2009 08:04 am (UTC)
Thank you, hon. Despite the fact that I don't wanna see Bodie smokingI just checked, and way back when - here, in fact I came up with that line and idea, in a pseudo-canon meme thing that solosundance and I messed around with. Was great to finally use it!
Aug. 16th, 2009 02:03 pm (UTC)
The intermission was just long enough to drink my coffee and and now I'm very much looking forward to Plan B. No pressure......
Aug. 16th, 2009 02:15 pm (UTC)
Thanks!! We'll see what the next challenge provides..*g*
Aug. 16th, 2009 09:49 pm (UTC)
This is lovely. I love the quiet resolution that Doyle has made and his reasons for doing so as it captures his character wonderfully. The banter between him and Jax and Murphy had me grinning hugely. But it was the air of anticipation and connection between him and Bodie that was the best. Thank you ♥
Aug. 17th, 2009 06:31 am (UTC)
Cheers, I needed a Doyle trying to be nicer, so I had to give him a reason. And no fic can ever be complete without a little squad room banter, so thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed that.
Aug. 16th, 2009 09:55 pm (UTC)

Loved it! <3
I wanna know some more... =P *grin*
Aug. 17th, 2009 06:32 am (UTC)
Thank you.. and yes, shall definitely get to our Doyle's Plan B at a later challenge.
